retained earnings is the wire from the P&L into equity — roll it and the sheet closes itself.
Your controller wants the closing balance sheet in the board pack by eight tomorrow, and the equity line is the only thing still empty. Retained earnings carries forward — last year closing balance plus this year net income and dividends — and until it does, the sheet does not balance. Roll it, total both sides, and prove the work with a check row that reads zero in all three years. A balance sheet that does not balance goes nowhere.
